The Diplomats led from wire-to-wire as Franklin & Marshall rolled to a 71-44 men's basketball win over Widener in the consolation game of the Rotary Tip-Off Tournament in Lancaster Saturday evening. The win improved Franklin & Marshall's record to 1-1, while Widener starts its year at 0-2.
All-Tournament selection Evan Hamme scored 19 points, hauled in seven rebounds, and blocked a pair of shots to lead the Diplomats to victory. Franklin & Marshall was particularly effective inside scoring two less points in the paint, 42, than Widener scored in the game.
The Diplomats clicked on 61.5 percent of its second half field goals to open a lead as large as 28 points. Bryan Teschke scored nine of his 12 points and Derek Hines grabbed seven of his 12 rebounds in the second period. In addition to his dozen rebounds, Hines finished the night with seven points and four dimes.
Widener's David Douglas scored seven points. That, combined with his 17-point effort in Friday's semifinal loss to Lincoln, landed the Pioneer on the All-Tournament team. Terry Smith was Widener's leading scorer in Saturday's loss the loss to the Diplomats. He posted nine points and nine rebounds.
The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday against Lebanon Valley. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
