Cassels & Onnen Score Four Goals as Diplomats Manage Muhlenberg 18-6 in Women's Lacrosse

LANCASTER, PA - Kelly Cassels (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) and Catherine Onnen (So., Lutherville, MD/St. Paul's School for Girls) each scored four goals to lead the #7 Franklin & Marshall College women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over visiting Muhlenberg College in Centennial Conference action at Sponaugle-Williamson Field.

Cassels finished the game with six points as she added a pair of assists, while Onnen recorded five points with an assist as the Diplomats won their 17th straight Centennial Conference regular season victory as F&M has not dropped a non-playoff conference game since a 9-8 loss to Washington College on April 10, 2004.

The Diplomats opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game as Onnen found Shannon Summers (Fr., North Wales, PA/The Hill School) for a goal at 25:22 and a 1-0 lead.

The margin expanded to 4-0 before the Mules' answered as Cassels scored off an assist from Kiki Foster (Sr., Denver, CO/Kent Denver) at 22:50 and recorded a free position goal at 21:43. Onnen scored on a free position shot at 20:31 to give F&M a 4-0 margin, but Muhlenberg's Sara Hiller scored on an assist from Marissa Capuano at 19:21 to trim the lead back to three goals.

Cassels responded for the Diplomats as she threaded a pass to Onnen in front of the crease for a goal at 15:42 before scoring her third goal of the game by finishing a pass from Jen Pritchard (Fr., Media, PA/Penncrest) at 15:27 for a 6-1 lead.

Hiller struck again on an assist from Courtney Tapkas at 11:09 to pull the Mules to within four goals, but the Diplomats' attack iced the win in six minutes scoring seven unanswered goals to take a 13-2 lead into halftime.

Onnen started the run with an unassisted goal at 7:51 before Brenna Dolphin (Jr., Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) netted an unassisted tally at 7:30 to push the lead to 8-2. Dolphin fed Cassels for her fourth goal of the game at 6:37 and Cassels dished a pass to Onnen for her fourth goal of the game at 4:44 before Sarah Meisenberg (Fr., Severna Park, MD/Severn) found Pritchard for a goal at 4:24.

The run closed out as Dolphin scored a free position goal at 2:59 and Meisenberg netted an unassisted goal at 2:04 for an 11-goal lead entering the break.

Overall, the Diplomats out shot the Mules 29-2 in the first half and controlled 12 of the half's 16 draw controls to dominate the statistical battle.

F&M continued their scoring run with three goals to open the second half as Meisenberg scored an unassisted goal at 28:39, Vanessa Brown (Fr., Phoenixville, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored a free position goal at 26:42 and Prichard finished a centering pass from Brown at 20:32 for a 16-2 lead.

Facing the Diplomats' reserves, Muhlenberg scored the next two goals as Taylor Armstrong and Hiller finished passes from Courtney Tapkas as 16:17 and 14:24, respectively, to trim the margin to 16-4.

The teams traded goals from there as Ellie Lisle (So., Gladwyne, PA/Harriton) and Armstrong scored unassisted at 12:22 and 9:32, respectively. Eileen Keever (Sr., Prospect Park, PA/Interboro) finished F&M's scoring off an assist from Ashley Wycoff (Fr., Fort Washington, PA/Hun School of Princeton) at 7:39 and Hiller netted her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Katie Reimann at 6:04 for the 18-6 final score.

In goal, Kamissa Mort (Sr., Ashton, MD/Sandy Spring) earned the win allowing five goals on five shots with no saves, while Julie Cutruzzula (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/The Ellis School) finished the final nine minutes allowing one goal on two shots. Caroline Shadood took the loss for Muhlenberg allowing 18 goals and making 17 saves as the Diplomats out shot the Mules 42-7 in the game.

The final score marked the most goals scored by the Diplomats in a game since a 19-10 victory over Rowan University on April 26, 2005 at Sponaugle-Williamson Field.

Franklin & Marshall (7-1, 3-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 5 at #5 Gettysburg College in a rematch of the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Centennial Conference title games. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
