Ursinus Sweeps F&M 8-1 & 14-2 in Softball Doubleheder

LANCASTER, PA - Centerfielder Dana Johns (Sr., York, PA/Eastern York) went three-for-six with a run scored and a run batted in, but Ursinus College slugged 23 hits and plated 22 runs to sweep Franklin & Marshall 8-1 and 14-2 in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Baker Field.

In game one, the Bears' Mallory Greene pitched a complete game allowing two hits and one run in seven innings with seven strikeouts as Ursinus notched an 8-1 victory.

The Bears (19-5, 6-2 Centennial Conference) went in front in the second inning as Sarah Hennessey singled and came into score on a single to centerfield by Jessica Cherry. Ursinus added to the lead in the third inning as Marci Logan walked to lead off the inning and Lindsay Schmidt followed with a two run homer to left field to go ahead 3-0.

The Diplomats cut into the lead with two outs in the bottom of the third inning as Jessika Mancino (Fr., Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) laid down a bunt single and stole second base. Johns followed with an RBI single to centerfield to pull to within 3-1.

The hits were the only ones allowed by Greene as the Bears added a single run in the fourth and pairs of runs in the fifth and sixth to take the 8-1 victory.

At the plate, Hennessey led the Bears going three-for-four with two runs scored, while Mary Reid was two-for-four with two runs scored and two RBI.

Bonnie Crouthamel (So., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) took the loss for F&M allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings with three strikeouts. Laura Kaesshaefer (So., Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) finished the game allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in two innings with a strikeout.

In game two, Ursinus plated nine runs in the top of the first inning on five hits and four errors to take a 14-2 victory.

Trailing 14-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, F&M scored two runs with two outs as Mancino doubled to left centerfield and moved to third on a single by Johns. Crouthamel singled to centerfield to drive in Mancino and Lauren Incorvaia (Fr., Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) singled to left centerfield to score Johns for the 14-2 final.

Lindsay Schmidt earned the win for Ursinus allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Ali Tyler (So., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) took the loss allowing nine runs on five hits and two walks with a strikeout in an inning, while Kaesshaefer permitted three runs on four hits with a strikeout in two innings and Crouthamel allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts in two innings.

Franklin & Marshall (4-25, 1-9 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 18 at home versus Gettysburg College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
