SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Alex Gilbert-Bono scored twice, netting the
first and final goal to lead Swarthmore past Franklin &
Marshall 3-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on
Saturday.
Devon Novotnak put the Garnet (6-11, 3-7 CC) up 2-0 early in the
second half with an unassisted goal, helping Swarthmore defeat the
Diplomats (11-6, 6-4 CC) for the first time since 2003.
Eileen
O'Reilly tallied the goal for F&M, while Jennifer Burdo
made nine saves in the cage.
Gilbert-Bono gave Swarthmore a 1-0 lead after knocking in a pass
from Ashley Gunter in the 18th minute. Novotnak made it 2-0 shortly
after halftime, before O'Reilly got F&M within one goal off an
assist from Stolle Singleton
at the 57:54 mark.
In the 63rd minute, Gilbert-Bono recorded her second goal of the
day on a fast break for a 3-1 edge and the win.
Katie Ashmore made six saves, before giving way to Gina Grubb in
the second half, who made four saves.
F&M clinches the fifth spot in the CC playoffs and will
travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday for a first-round game. Game time
is to be determined.
