Franklin & Marshall's 20th ranked field hockey team pulled off a 3-2 upset of #2 Ursinus on Saturday. The Franklin & Marshall win marks the Diplomats' first in the series since the Bears joined Division III in 2007, and snapped Ursinus' 44-game winning streak in Centennial Conference play.
The Diplomats (8-2, 4-1 CC) got a pair of goals from Eileen O'Reilly, including the game-winner late in the second half. Both of O'Reilly's goals were assisted by Pamela Cassidy. The Bears (8-2, 4-1 CC) held a 1-0 lead at the half on the strength of a Kait Sutherland goal, but Franklin & Marshall scored a quick pair early in the second half.
O'Reilly scored Franklin & Marshall's first 4:13 into the second period, finishing Cassidy's pass across the goalmouth from the left post. Less than seven minutes later, Jessika Mancino gave the Diplomats a 2-1 lead finishing a scramble behind the Bears' keeper, Jessica Lamina.
The lead lasted less than three minutes before Jessica Zatwarnicki sent a 10-yard pass across the goal and under the stick of a sprawling Jennifer Burdo. Lindsay Cappa banged it into the open left side of the cage to knot it at 2-2. It stood that way until O'Reilly cleaned up another ball that had squirted loose from a scrum with 11:58 left in the contest.
F&M hung on in spite of a handful of penalty corners down the stretch, including back-to-back corners in the closing seconds. Ursinus held an 18-4 advantage in corners, and a 12-10 edge in shots.
Both Burdo and Lamina recoded five saves for their respective teams.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when the Diplomats host Hopkins in Centennial play.
