LANCASTER, Pa. - Jessika Mancino keeps proving to be clutch in
overtime, scoring her third game-winning goal in an extra period
and leading Franklin & Marshall over Dickinson 1-0 in
Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Tuesday.
Mancino carried the ball from the midfield, putting the
Diplomats (5-10, 2-6 CC) in a two-on-one situation with Eileen
O'Reilly making a dash for the cage. Mancino passed the ball inside
the arc to O'Reilly before getting it back and tapping in her shot
past Amanda West with 5:34 gone in the first overtime period.
The Diplomats withstood the test of time, including 19 shots and
26 penalty corners by the Red Devils (8-6, 4-3 CC). Naomi Stone,
making her second start in the cage, came away with key stops in
the contest and finished with six saves to record her first
collegiate shutout.
Dickinson had four consecutive opportunities on penalty corners
in a span of two minutes but could not capitalize on the breaks.
With 20:54 left in the game, Stone made a diving save on a shot
from Amanda Zavada to keep the Red Devils off the board.
F&M made the most of its offensive chances, placing three
out of the four shots on goal and scoring on the second of two
shots taken in overtime.
The victory avenges a 4-3 loss to Dickinson last year in
Carlisle and gives the Diplomats their fifth win of the
season.
F&M will travel to Muhlenberg on Friday for its second to
last conference game of the season, beginning at 7 p.m.
