GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The top-seeded Gettysburg women's volleyball
team used scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17 to defeat Franklin &
Marshall 3-0 in the Centennial Conference (CC) semifinals on
Saturday at Bream Gymnasium.
The Bullets (18-10) collected their second win over the
Diplomats (13-16) this season to advance to the championship game
on Sunday at 1 p.m. Gettysburg will face the winner of Johns
Hopkins and Haverford.
Sophomore Kate Yoder recorded a game-high 10 kills and three
block assists, while Amanda Krempf handed out 28 assists.
For F&M, Margot Phelan led with seven kills and eight digs,
while Pam Horner totaled 10 digs and Val Pusateri dished out 17
assists. Nicole Morano added six kills and two blocks.
In close game one, it came down to the final points to decide
the winner. The Bullets never trailed and took a 9-4 lead off six
kills to force a F&M timeout. The Diplomats got within three on
seven occasions until Lis Powers' ace made it 22-20. Phelan's two
kills kept F&M in the game, but an attack error and a kill by
Krempf sealed the victory, 25-22.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game two, getting all
five points on errors to force an immediate timeout by the
Diplomats. After Yoder's block put the Bullets up 9-5, Gettysburg
won the next 11 out of 15 points, including six in a row that
involved a kill by Kristina Mercier and an ace by Kristin Kotewicz
for a commanding 20-9 lead.
F&M won the next four points behind the serving of Erica
Spangler and Gettysburg called a timeout to slow the Diplomats
momentum. F&M cut the deficit to 23-19, but the Bullets held on
to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 game-two victory.
With the third game tied at 6-all, Gettysburg reeled off eight
consecutive points to take a 14-6 lead with a service error
stopping the run. The Bullet did not let the Diplomats get closer
than five points en route to a 25-17 win to advance to the
championship game.
