CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Margot Phelan recorded
a double-double to lead Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team
to its first win of the season, a 3-0 sweep of Washington College
in the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams . The
Diplomats (1-5, 1-0 CC) won 25-17, 25-21, 25-19, leaving the
Shorewomen with a record of 4-4, (0-1 CC).
Phelan recorded match highs of 13 kills and 17 digs to deliver
F&M's first win of the season. Three of her kills came in the
run to the finish when F&M rolled up seven-straight points to
close out the match. Washington appeared set to take affairs to a
fourth game, holding a 17-12 lead in the third, but the Diplomats
rallied for a 6-3 mini-run started by kills from Nicole
Morano and Erica Spangler. The Dips
knotted the score at 19-up on a Washington attack error before
recording the final seven points of the night.
Spangler had a solid night with 10 kills, nine digs and five
aces, while Morano added nine kills and a pair of blocks to the
F&M cause. Val Pusateri fueled the offense
with 26 assists, while leading the charge in defensive points with
four blocks. Pam Horner contributed 12 digs, nine
assists and two kills.
Washington got nine kills from Alysaa Forget, while Caitlin Ward
aided the attack with 24 assists.
The win snapped Franklin & Marshall's losing streak at five
matches, and leaves the Diplomats four wins away from head coach
Mary Kate Boland's 100th career win. Franklin &
Marshall will return to action on Saturday at the Christopher
Newport Invitational. The Diplomats will play Emory at 4:00 p.m.
and Christopher Newport at 6:00 p.m.
