LANCASTER, Pa. - Jamie Smith scored two goals and Kristin Mele
added another to lead McDaniel over Franklin & Marshall 3-1 in
Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (3-2, 1-1 CC) tallied all three goals in the
first half en route to their first conference win of the season.
Mele netted the first goal in the fourth minute, before Smith found
the back of the cage in a three minute, 49 second span to put
McDaniel ahead 3-0 by halftime.
The Diplomats (2-3, 0-1 CC) fired off nine shots on the day and
were award 12 penalty corners, but the lone goal by Valerie Sauers
was not enough to get the win in their conference opener.
McDaniel held the advantage in the first half, scoring off its
first shot of the day at the 3:54 mark. Michelle Fluty created an
F&M turnover and connected with Mele inside the circle for a
1-0 lead. Smith made it a quick 3-0 lead with consecutive goals in
the 21st and 25th minute. Smith scored her
first goal off a rebounded shot taken by Jessica Largent, before
finishing the ball off a pass from Lindsay Riordon.
F&M had three straight opportunities on corners in the final
two and a half minutes of the opening stanza, but was unable to get
on the board to close the half.
Sauers cut the lead to 3-1 at the 53:45 mark, giving the
Diplomats more momentum with 16:15 left to play. Off a penalty
corner, Sauers collected the ball and worked her way around the
defender, before scoring on a back-handed shot from the top of the
circle.
Goalie Jennifer Burdo made three saves, while Erika Wawzyanick
registered two stops.
F&M returns to action on Saturday at fourth-ranked Lebanon
Valley. Game time is 11 a.m.
