LANCASTER, Pa. - Elizabethtown dropped the first game, but
rallied over the next three to take a 3-1 win at Franklin &
Marshall Tuesday evening. The Blue Jays (2-1) spoiled the
Diplomats' (0-1) season and home opener, sneaking away with three
consecutive wins in tights games.
The Blue Jays needed five match points to put F&M away, but
they did just that when Kara Burkholder feigned a pass and popped a
ball into the back right portion of the F&M half. Her sixth
kill of the night ended F&M's hoped of sending the match to a
fifth game.
While Burkholder got the final kill, two Jays' did the bulk of
the damage to the Diplomats' cause. Kayla Deats posted 11 kills,
while Paige Tanner recorded ten. Tanner closed out the third game
with an authoritative spike in the back right. That game had seen
the teams trade points throughout.
The Diplomats received double-double efforts from Margot
Phelan and Erica Spangler. Spangler had
16 kills and 10 digs, while Phelan had 15 kills and 14 digs.
Jessica Poucel recorded 10 kills starting her
first collegiate match. Nicole Morano had 11 kills
and three blocks for F&M.
Pam Horner led all setters in the game with 46
assists. The Blue Jays' Burkholder helped out on 22 kills.
With the loss, F&M opens the season at 0-1. The Diplomats
return to the floor this weekend at the Washington & Jefferson
Holiday INNvitational.
