LANCASTER, Pa. - Shannon Summers and Kelsey Tylus each scored a
goal, but it was goalkeeper Erin Roy that made big saves down the
stretch to help Franklin & Marshall hold off Cabrini 2-1 in
non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday evening.
Roy preserved the win for the Diplomats (1-0) by making a save
on Kara Hinkelmon's penalty kick attempt with 6:36 left to play,
giving BJ Atkins her first collegiate win as head coach and the
team a season-opening victory.
F&M looked anxious to be playing its first game of the year
and showed it in the first 2:32 of the game when Danielle David
sent a cross in from the left side and Summers headed the ball into
the goal for a 1-0 lead just moments in the opening half.
Tylus made it 2-0 on her shot that sailed into the top left
corner from 30-yards out in the 52nd minute.
The Diplomats dominated the play despite the shot count in favor
of the Cavaliers (1-2), 12-9. However, Cabrini never backed down
and found the back of the net on a low-driving shot by Hinkelmon
with 7:36 left to play.
Exactly a minute later, Hinkelmon was awarded a penalty kick for
being fouled inside the box but Roy made the heroic save and was
able to keep the Cavaliers off the board for the remainder of the
game.
Roy finished with six saves for F&M, including a diving save
to the left on a shot by Annmarie Kolla at the 27:16 mark of the
second half. Gianna Porretta tallied three saves on six shots on
goal.
The Diplomats return to action on Friday when they host the
F&M Tournament and face St. John Fisher in the opening round.
