LANCASTER, Pa. - Andrea Miles scored off a scramble in front of
the cage, proving to be the game winner to lead Elizabethtown over
Franklin & Marshall 3-1in non-conference field hockey action on
Wednesday.
The Blue Jays (3-0) spoiled the home opener for the Diplomats
(0-1), breaking a 1-all tie with two goals in the second half for
their third straight win of the season. Megan Angstadt recorded an
insurance goal and an assist, while Liz DeMatteis netted her fourth
goal of the season.
Pam Cassidy, the returning leading scorer for F&M, tallied
her first goal of the season and Jen Burdo gathered 12 saves in the
cage. Mollie Ruben added a defensive save in the loss.
Elizabethtown fired off 27 shots and held the Diplomats to six
shots and just four on goal to avenge a 2-1 loss to F&M last
season.
Angstadt found DeMatteis on the right corner from the top of the
circle in the 15th minute to start the scoring for the
Blue Jays and hold on to a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Diplomats evened the score on their first penalty corner of
the second half. Valerie Sauers sent the ball to the far left and
Cassidy was there for the one-touch blast into the cage at the
37:18 mark.
Elizabethtown took the lead by two goals thanks to Miles. She
scored the game winner in the 48th minute and then
assisted Angstadt with four minutes to play on a penalty corner for
a 3-1 edge that would stand.
Liz Hannegan made two saves for the Blue Jays, who also held a
10-4 advantage in penalty corners on the afternoon.
F&M returns to action this weekend at Roanoke where it will
face the Maroons on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., before facing Lynchburg
on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
