COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Touchdowns on three consecutive possessions
was all Franklin & Marshall needed to hand Ursinus a 21-14
their first setback in Centennial Conference (CC) play this season.
John Kaschak did the bulk of the damage with 129 yards and two
touchdowns, moving F&M to 4-1 (2-1 cc) for the first time in
five years.
It took the Diplomats awhile to shake off the bye week rust. The
Bears (2-3, 2-1 cc) took the opening kickoff and needed only three
plays to put F&M in an early hole. Justin Decristofaro hit Nick
Giarratano for a 52-yard strike to make it 7-0 just 61 seconds into
play. The play accounted almost one-third of the Bears' 164-yards
of offense on the day. Meanwhile, a punt ended F&M's first
drive, while a red zone interception halted a 75-yard march on
their second possession.
The offense finally got on track late in the first quarter with
a 73-yard drive capped by John Kaschak's first trip into the
endzone, a four-yard jaunt. That was the first of three consecutive
possessions that ended in Ursinus' endzone. Kaschak rushed
for 78 yards on 11 carries on the afternoon. He also caught seven
passes for 51 more yards including a four-yard touchdown pass that
capped the three-touchdown surge.
On the first possession after Kaschak's first score, the
Diplomats went 43 yards in six plays to make it a 14-7 ball game.
John Harrison finished the drive with a touchdown pass to Mike
Deutch from four yards out. Harrison completed 30 of his 47
pass attempts for 305 yards on the day. He crossed the 300-yard
plateau for the fourth time in as many games, breaking into
F&M's top ten in passing yards with 2,990 career yards at the
end of his 15th game in blue and white. His
31st career touchdown pass leaves him alone in sixth
overall on F&M's career charts.
F&M sacks and Ursinus penalties hurt the Bears all
afternoon. F&M posted eight sacks for losses of 48 yards in the
contest, its most dominant day of dropping passers since putting up
eight sacks against Oberlin in 2001. The Bears were flagged 10
times in the game, setting the hosts back 112 yards.
Despite the dominant defensive effort, the Bears managed to make
it a game in the waning moments of the fourth quarter. Ursinus'
Greg Martell fell on a fumbled exchange between Harrison and Ryan
Murray at the F&M 31. Don Wiezik's third sack of the day cost
the Bears ten yards, ultimately setting up a third and 19 that saw
Ursinus collect a first down on the F&M 26. The penalty was
F&M's eighth of the day, accounting for the final 15 of 84
penalty yards.
Massaro added F&M's eighth sack on third and five to
followed by a false start to make it fourth and 16 on the
32-yardline. That's when Decristofaro and Giarratano hooked up
again. The Bears receiver snared the pass one-yard deep in the
endzone to get his team within a possession with 4:56 showing.
Decristofaro finished the game with 164 yards on a 9-of-24
effort. Giarrantano accounted for 123 of the yards, five of the
receptions, and both touchdowns.
F&M recovered the ensuing onsides kick and killed most of
the clock, primarily on handoffs to Alan Williams. The Bears got
the ball back with six seconds deep in their own territory. With no
timeouts, they were unable to threaten the Diplomats lead.
In addition to Wiezik's three sacks, Massaro accounted for a
pair, while Kyle Wengerter got to Decristofaro one-and-a-half
times. Massaro recorded seven tackles. Frank DiMattia led all
F&M tacklers with eight stops.
Franklin & Marshall wraps up a two-game road swing
unblemished, and returns to Sponaugle-Williamson for a homestand
against Lehigh Valley opponents. F&M will host Moravian next
Saturday, followed by a Homecoming date with Muhlenberg in two
weeks.
