LANCASTER, Pa. – The fourth ranked
Franklin & Marshall men's basketball team lived up to
their preseason billing, defeating City Tech 102-40 in the first
round of the 2009 Rotary Tip-Off Tournament.
The game marked the first time since a 107-71
victory over Bard on January 2, 2007 that the Diplomats scored over
100 points. The 62 points scoring margin was the
largest since the Diplomats defeated Bethany 108-43 on December
14th, 2002.
The Diplomats (1-0) jumped out to an early
19-0 lead. The F&M defense limited the Yellow Jackets (0-2) to
only three field goals in the first half with their first coming
with 6:43 left. F&M scored 46 points off of
turnovers and picked up 48 points from the bench. They had five
players scoring in double figures.
F&M's James McNally led all scorers
with 17 points. McNally was 8-for-11 from the field, grabbed six
rebounds, had three steals and blocked two shots.
Brandon Beckford chipped in 15 points off of the
bench with a 5-for-7 performance from the floor. Beckford was
2-for-2 from behind the arc and 3-for-4 at the line
Steve Tolliver scored 11 points, with a
2-for-6 night from the point line and 4-for-10 from the field. Mike
Baker and Georgio Milligan dropped ten apiece, each going 4-for-7
from the field. Anthony Brooks and Milligan led the team with six
assists.
Gabriel Davis led City Tech with 12 points.
Davis was 3-for-12 from the field and 6-for-7 from the charity
stripe.
The Diplomats will face Gwynedd-Mercy, an
87-77 winner over St. Lawrence, in the championship game scheduled
for 8 p.m. The third place game will feature St. Lawrence and City
Tech at 6 p.m.
