LANCASTER, Pa. - Brandon Beckford's jumper with 50 seconds
remaining put the Diplomats up for good as they battled to a 78-74
victory over Ursinus in both team's Centennial Conference (CC)
opener. Beckford's basket resulted in the fourth and final lead
change in the last five minutes of the game.
Georgio Milligan drained two free throws with 21 seconds
remaining, putting the Diplomats up 74-71. Remy Cousart turned the
ball over on the ensuing possession and a personal foul followed by
a technical foul brought Milligan and Beckford to line with each
shooting two. All four shots found the bottom of the net giving
F&M a 78-71 advantage. Matt Hilton hit a three in the last
second accounting for the 78-74 final score.
Milligan was on fire all night scoring a career-high 33 points.
He shot 70.5% (12-for-17) from the floor, 4-for-5 from the foul
line and a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc.
After battling back and fourth for the first six minutes,
F&M (5-1) took a 15-13 lead on a trey by Milligan and built a
16-point lead with 3:47 remaining in the first half. The Bears
(3-2) awoke from their hibernation, going on an 11-2 run
to close out the half.
Milligan led all scorers in the first with 17 points, McNally
added ten for the Diplomats. Ursinus' Matt Hilton and Remy Cousart
led the Bears with eight and seven points apiece.
The Bears opened up the second half just as they finished the
first on Cousart led 11-5 run, spanning the first four minutes of
the half. Cousart scored seven points in the run and Kevin Janowski
added six.
F&M returned the favor with an 11-4 five-minute run with
seven point from Milligan. The Bears answered with two threes by
Janowski and Cousart to tie the score a 57-57 with 9:26
remaining. The teams trading baskets resulting in 63-63 tie
with 5:49 left on the clock. Another tie and four lead changes over
the final five minutes led to the 78-74 final.
Mike Baker chipped in 13 points and James McNally added 12 for
the Diplomats. Anthony Brooks scored nine points while Beckford
turned in seven on a career high 33 minutes of action.
Cousart scored a team-high 23 points for Ursinus. He was
9-for-19 from the field and 2-for-3 from the three-point line.
Janowski added 18 and Matt Hilton had 17 points for the Bears.
The Diplomats held a 41-34 advantage on the boards and scored 23
points off of turnovers.
Franklin & Marshall returns to court on December
5th when the Diplomats travel to McDaniel with a
double-header against the Green Terror. The women tip-off at 1:00
pm followed by the men at 3:00 pm.
