LANCASTER, Pa. - Kristin Phillips sank the game-winning free
throws in the final seven seconds of the game to lead Johns Hopkins
past Franklin & Marshall 66-64 in Centennial Conference (CC)
women's basketball action on Thursday.
Phillips grabbed the offensive rebound off Siobhan Callanan's
layup and drew the foul, connecting on both shots from the line to
finish 12-for-13 from the charity stripe on the night for a
game-high 27 points. She also led on the boards with 15 for a
double-double and help the Blue Jays (10-10, 8-5 CC) avenge a
two-point loss to the Diplomats (11-9, 8-5 CC) earlier in the
season.
Sarah Meisenberg paced F&M with 20 points, setting a career
high with 14 free throws made on 16 attempts. Amanda Miceli
recorded her second straight double figure game with 14 points. As
a team, F&M went 35-for-42 from the line to set a new school
record for most free throws made and attempted in a game.
With under 10 minutes to play in the game, Hopkins extended its
two-point lead to seven off a jumper by Callanan and consecutive
three-pointers by Stephanie Fong to take a 59-52 advantage. Miceli
scored the next four points for F&M to make it 59-56 with 6:53
left.
At 5:19, Meisenberg drew the foul on her way to the basket and
made both free throws at 59-58. Lyndsay Burton got three points for
the Blue Jays, but Miceli answered with the layup and the free
throw to get it within one again.
The teams exchanged free throws and Meisenberg made one of two
from the line to knot the game at 64-all with 35 seconds remaining.
Hopkins gained possession and Phillips got two rebounds with the
second one drawing the foul with seven seconds left.
The Diplomats made one last attempt, but Burton was there to
make the block on the final shot from behind the arc to seal the
win.
Phillips scored six of the opening 14 points for the Blue Jays
to take a 14-5 lead at the 14:41 mark. A 9-3 run by F&M cut the
deficit to 17-14, but Caitlin Sloane drained a three-pointer to
push the lead to 20-14
Free-throw shooting gave the Diplomats the lead on two occasions
with the latter coming at 23-22 with 3:38 left in the first half.
Hopkins closed out the half with an 11-2 run for an 8-point lead
into the locker room.
The Blue Jays hit eight three points on the night to F&M's
one from beyond the arc.
Beth Holt finished with 12 points and Cara Landolfi tallied 11
points and eight rebounds.
F&M returns to action on Saturday against Washington. Game
time is 2 p.m.
