LANCASTER, Pa. – Muhlenberg pounded out 24 hits, including
four home runs over the course of a Centennial Conference (CC)
softball sweep of Franklin & Marshall. The Mules (8-10, 3-1 CC)
captured the first game 11-3, then defeated the Diplomats (12-8,
2-2 CC) 5-3 in the nightcap.
Muhlenberg catcher, RiRi Ferrigno hit two home runs and two doubles
in her four at bats to pile up six RBIs in the first game. Her
first double of the game gave Muhlenberg a 2-0 lead in the
first. She led off the third inning with a home run that made
it a 4-2 Muhlenberg game. She was intentionally walked in the
fourth, then hit a two run blast in the sixth to make it 6-2.
Mules' designated player, Maggie Scarpelli, then scorched a
line drive into the chest of Diplomats' starter, Meredith
Morgan, ending her day. Morgan came off of the field under her own
power. She took the loss working five-and-two-thirds. She allowed
six runs, five earned, and struck out six.
The Mules pitcher, Ashley Brewer, limited F&M to three hits and
struck out eight in a complete game. She picked up the win to move
to 4-5 on the season.
After getting on the board first, the Diplomats fell behind 4-1 in
the second game.
Jess Mancino led off the F&M first by reaching on a bunt, and
was driven home on a Kristina Fietkiewicz double. Muhlenberg
responded when Jess Kasza hit a solo home run in the third.
Samantha Crist hit a two-run shot in the fifth, the same inning in
which Ferrigno drove in her lone RBI of the game.
Sam Basuk made things interesting with a two-out double that plated
Barbara Sasson and Jess Feldmen, each of whom got on board with a
hit to make it 4-3. Mules' starter, Alyssa Bruckner, yielded
the circle to Brewer. The Mules gave her an insurance run in the
top of the seventh.
The Diplomats loaded the bags against Brewer in the seventh, but
saw the game come to an end on a 1-2-3 double play, securing
Bruckner's (4-5) win and Brewer's first save of the
year.
F&M picked up 10 hits in the nightcap with Mancino leading the
way with a 3-for-4 effort. Feldman went 2-for-4. Both scored a run
for F&M.
The Diplomats twinbill slated for Sunday against PSU-Hazelton, has
been postponed to Friday, April 10. The Diplomats next see action
on Tuesday at McDaniel.
