LANCASTER, Pa - Buffalo State's Melissa Mahoney's goal in the
71st minute was all the Bengals needed to
defeat Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in the consolation round of
F&M's 2009 Kickoff Classic Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field.
Katie Hennes found Mahoney cutting through the Diplomats
defense. Mahoney dribbled past F&M's keeper Katie Golding, for
the lone goal. The Diplomats managed four shots, two of which were
on goal, while the Bengals had 11 shots on goal.
Buffalo State's Virginia Porten picked up the win collecting two
saves. Stopping nine shots, Golding took the loss.
The Championship saw Widener play into overtime for the second
day in a row. The deadlock went unbroken through the two overtime
periods. While the game officially ends in a tie, the game went to
a shootout to determine the tournament's champion. Widener won
becoming the 2009 Kickoff Classic Champions.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action on September 16 when
they travel to Elizabethtown for a 7:00 pm game time.
