LANCASTER, Pa. - Kelsey Kemp scored on the final series of
strokes to lift Washington College to a 2-1 victory over Franklin
& Marshall Friday evening in Centennial Conference (CC) field
hockey action. The Diplomats' five game winning streak came to an
end as The Diplomats fell to 5-2 (1-1 CC) on the year.
100 minutes of action failed to produce a winner and the game
went to a stroke-off. The Diplomats held a 2-1 advantage as Maura
Hennigan and Paulette Cutruzzula connected on their strokes. With
two players for each team remaining, the Shorewomen (3-4, 2-1 CC)
settled in and made their remaining two strokes for the 2-1
victory.
The Diplomats struck first when Allison McLaren found Eileen
O'Reilly on a give and go play in the 18th minute. Washington got
on the board in 50th minute when Sara Rutkowski pass found Kristen
Wille who fired it home from eight meters out.
Each team had multiple chances in the ensuing two overtimes, but
both goalies stood tall, sending the game into strokes.
The Diplomats held a 20-16 shot advantage and had 12 penalty
corners to Washington's 10.
F&M's Naomi Stone stopped five shots in absorbing the loss.
Stone falls to 5-2 on year. Washington's Elena Nicholoff picked up
11 saves and improves to 3-4.
The Diplomats return to action September 29 th when F&M
travels to Gettysburg.
