LANCASTER, Pa. - Andrew Chambers hit a three-pointer with 29
seconds left in overtime as Washington defeated #11 Franklin &
Marshall 68-63 in a Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball
game. It was the first loss at home for F&M this season
and snaps a 13-game winning streak at the Mayser Center. The loss
is the second conference setback for the Diplomats as they fall to
5-2 in the CC and 11-3 overall. Washington improved to 6-5 (4-3
CC).
The Shoremen scored the first five points in overtime. Alan
Kines hit a layup, and went to the line shooting one, three seconds
into the period. Doug Holcombe collected Kines' miss and Chambers
hit a trey 13 seconds later to give Washington a 61-56 lead.
Anthony Brooks scored four unanswered points over two minutes to
bring F&M within a point. Kevin Breslin hit two foul shots to
put the Shoremen up 63-60, before Brooks answered with two of his
own. Georgio Milligan hit the front end of his two foul shots,
tying the game a 63 apiece with 1:23 remaining.
Milligan blocked a shot by Chris Olsen on the next possession,
but Kines came away with the ball and found an open Chambers who
drained the trifecta with 29 seconds on the clock. Milligan missed
a three with 14 seconds left and Olsen hit two free throws to seal
the victory for the Shoremen.
F&M led by as many as nine points in the opening stanza and
Steve Tolliver's jumper with two seconds left, gave F&M a 32-27
halftime lead.
Washington opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 33-32
lead. The Diplomats responded with a 13-4 run of their own to go up
45-37 with 11:20 on the clock. Washington rallied to go up 46-45 on
a three by Sal Schittino. F&M put together a 7-2 spurt go up
four points, 52-48, with 6:15 left in the game.
The score was tied three times over the next five minutes. James
McNally hit a foul shot with 1:04 remaining for the third tie,
56-56. F&M set up to take the final shot, but Brooks' jumper as
time expired fell short, sending the game into overtime.
Brooks led all scorers with 21 points. He shot 6-for-11 from the
field and 8-for-11 at the line. He was one of the few bright spots
from the stripe for F&M. The Diplomat shot 18-of-32, 13.2%
below their season average.
McNally chipped in 19 points on 6-for-15 shooting. He added
eight boards and two steals. Milligan finished with nine points and
seven rebounds.
Three players scored in double-figures for Washington. Kines and
Breslin scored 16 points apiece and Chambers added 15. Kines
finished with a double-double, collecting 14 boards.
The Shoremen held a commanding 57-44 advantage on the glass,
finishing with 29 on the offensive side, resulting in 26
second-chance points. The Diplomats shot 37.3% from the field and
Washington shot 33.3%.
Franklin & Marshall returns to court on Saturday when the
Diplomats host McDaniel for a doubleheader. The women tip-off at 2
p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m.
