LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall went on a 22-13 run in
the final 3:42 to defeat Susquehanna 87-80 in the first round of
the 2010 Sponaugle New Years Tournament. The Diplomats
improved to 7-2 while the Crusaders dropped to 6-5.
James McNally scored 18 points, and pulled down seven rebounds,
to join the 1,000 points / 500 rebounds club. McNally became the
30th player to score 1,000 points and the
13th player to both score a grand and pull down 500
rebounds.
The last player to reach 1,000 points was Brandon Smith
'06. Smith finished his career with 1,543 points.
McNally currently ranks 28th in career scoring with
1,010. He accomplished this feat in 66 games.
After trailing by one with 16:21 showing on the clock, F&M
but together an 11-0 run to go up 55-45. The Diplomats never
trailed after that run. Brandon Beckford and McNally each
scored four points in the run.
Susquehanna came within two points on a Spenser Spencer field
goal with 3:42 left in the game, but could not take the lead as
F&M finished on 22-13 run.
F&M found itself in and 11-7 deficit early, before
responding with a 22-8 run spanning 10 minutes to go up 29-19 with
4:48 remaining in the fist half. Led by Georgio Milligan and
McNally's nine points apiece, the Diplomats took a 39-32 lead into
half.
In addition to McNally, the Diplomats had five other players
score in double figures. Milligan finished with a game-high 23
points. He shot 6-for-13 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the line.
Mike Baker, Kevin Henry and Beckford all finished with 11 points.
Anthony Brooks added 10.
J.T. Wilson and Bryan Majors led the way for the Crusaders.
Wilson scored 22 points shooting 50% and Majors chipped in 17.
F&M held a 44-36 advantage on the boards and picked up 25
points from its bench.
Manhattanville defeated Brooklyn 71-65 in the first game and
advanced to the tournament final. The consolidation game will
feature Susquehanna and Brooklyn and tip off at 6:00pm. The
Diplomats will be in their third consecutive Sponaugle final
starting at 8:00 pm tomorrow night.
