HAVERFORD, Pa. - Dominique Meeks' layup with 18 seconds
remaining proved to be the difference as Haverford defeated
Franklin & Marshall 54-52 in a Centennial Conference (CC)
women's basketball game Saturday afternoon. The Fords improved to
5-10 (3-8 CC) while F&M fell to 8-9 (4-8 CC).
The Diplomats erased an early eight-point deficit in the second
to tie the game at 39 on an Alexa Barbush layup. Five ties, and two
lead changes, ensued over the final 12 minutes of the game. Amy
Chabitnoy's layup at 2:56 resulted in the fifth and final tie with
the score knotted at 52.
Three turnovers, and three missed shots, by F&M in the final
three minutes set up Meeks' game-winning shot. The Diplomats
had one more chance when Beth Holt collected a missed free throw by
Meeks but Calla Miller took the ball away from Holt to secure the
win.
F&M held a slight 13-10 advantage in the first half, before
Haverford answered with a 15-4 run to lead 25-17. Holt's layup with
54 seconds remaining cut Haverford's lead to three. Nia Richardson
hit two free throws in the final 25 seconds to give the Fords a
29-24 halftime lead.
Three players scored in double-figures for the Diplomats. Collen
Bott and Alexa Barbush scored 13 points apiece and Allison Bauer
added 10. Bott finished shooting 4-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-6
from line. Barbush shot 42% and collected a team-high nine rebounds
and Bauer finished 4-for-10 from the field.
Nina Voith scored a game-high 18 points for the Fords. Voith
went 8-for-18 from the floor and collected five rebounds. Meeks
added 10 for Haverford.
Franklin & Marshall continues its three-game road trip when
the Diplomats travel to Johns Hopkins for a double-header on
Wednesday. The women tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8
p.m.
