LANCASTER, Pa. - With ice in their veins, and opponents in hot
pursuit, Anthony Brooks and Georgio Milligan made six clutch free
throws in the final minute to secure a 63-57 Franklin &
Marshall victory over Manhattanville. The victory marks the
third straight, and 23rd overall, Sponaugle New Years
title for the Diplomats.
With 57 seconds remaining in the game and the score tied at
57-57, Milligan sank the first of four free throws made, on six
attempts, in the final minute. He drained three more from the line
and added a steal down the stretch. Brooks hit two free throws with
25 seconds left to give F&M a 60-57 lead.
F&M (8-2) led wire-to-wire, but Manhattanville (6-5)
overcame an early 14-point deficit to tie the game three times in
the second half. The Valiants knotted the game a 39 halfway
through the second on two free throws by Glen Rodriguez. Free
throws became a deciding factor as both teams found themselves in
the penalty early. F&M responded with a 9-2 run to build its
lead to 48-41 with a little over eight minutes remaining.
Manhattanville answered with a 16-9 run of its own, tying the
game at 57, which set up Brooks and Milligan's shots.
The Diplomats opened the game with a 21-7 run over the first
nine minutes to build a 14-point lead. They cooled off a little and
took a 31-24 edge into the locker room.
Milligan scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the first half.
He finished the night shooting 3-for-10 from the floor, and
10-for-15 from the line, earning MVP honors. Mike Baker and Brooks
also scored in double figures for the Diplomats. Baker turned in a
double-double, scoring 10 and pulling down 12 boards. Baker was
named to the All-Tournament Team. Brooks chipped in 12, on 2-for-4
shooting, and a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe.
Trevoy Pointer led Manhattanville with 15 points and 10 boards
and Angelo Laroche added 13 points for the Valiants. Pointer earned
a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Susquehanna earned a 92-76 victory over Brooklyn in the
consolation game.
