LANCASTER, Pa. – Genny Pezzola hit her eighth and final
three-pointer to lead Swarthmore to a 88-83 double overtime win
over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC)
women's basketball action on Saturday evening. The Garnet
improved to 9-10 (6-8 CC) while the Diplomats fell to 8-11 (4-10
CC).
F&M took its first and only lead in the beginning of the
second overtime, but Swarthmore's five consecutive points
sealed the win over the Diplomats for the second time this season.
Pezzola went 8-for-11 from behind the three-point line, scoring a
team-high 24 points.
Swarthmore took an early lead in the first half, but F&M
clawed its way back, trailing by eight going into half time. The
squads battled back and fourth throughout the second period as
Swarthmore clung to a three-point lead with 30 seconds
remaining.
Down by three with two seconds left in regulation, Megan Pauley
drained a three-pointer off of a pass from Beth Holt to send the
game into overtime.
Swarthmore held a five-point advantage briefly during the
overtime period, but F&M did not let down. Kathryn Stockbower
missed a free throw that could have sealed the game for the Garnet,
giving the blue and white another chance to retaliate yet again.
Holt hit a trifecta with four seconds on the clock to send the game
into its second overtime.
F&M opened up with a quick lead on a Holt trey, but after a
layup and a Pezzola three-pointer, Swarthmore never looked back.
Pamela Costello notched two free throws with six seconds left to
lift the Garnet to a final five-point edge.
Pauley recorded a career-high 32 points, shooting five-for-five
from the charity stripe. Holt also recorded a career-high 26
points, in addition to her career-high six three-pointers. The two
combined for 70 percent of the team's points.
Costello posted 18 points, going six-for-nine from the field and
four-for-six from behind the arc. Stockbower and Ceylan Bodur both
recorded double-doubles on the night for the Garnet. Stockbower
netted 17 points and collected 10 rebounds, while Bodur chipped in
14 points and grabbed 10 boards.
F&M returns to action on Feb. 1, traveling to Ursinus for a
conference match-up. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m.
