COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Beth Holt is normally known for her offense,
but it was her defense that secured a 57-55 win over Ursinus for
Franklin & Marshall on Monday night in Centennial Conference
(CC) women's basketball action. The Diplomats snapped a five-game
losing skid, improving to 9-11, 5-10 CC, while the Bears fell to
8-11, 5-9 CC.
Holt grabbed a steal with five seconds remaining in regulation,
and passed it off to Alexa Barbush. Barbush was fouled and hit one
of two free throw attempts to send F&M up by two. Holt blocked
a three-point shot by Ursinus' Jaclyn Hilf as time expired, lifting
the Diplomats to its first win in over two weeks.
F&M was slow at the start of the game, shooting two-for
eight from the field, allowing the Bears to take an eight-point
lead. Two jumpers from Barbush, however, put the Diplomats back
into scoring position eleven minutes into the contest. The squads
battled back and fourth for the remainder of the first half, but
F&M had a four-point edge going into the break.
Four minutes into the second period, F&M took the lead and
never let up. Mid-way through the second half, the Diplomats held
an eight-point advantage that Ursinus slowly tried to chip away at.
Slighted by a second-half shooting percentage of 34, the Bears
struggled to keep up with the Diplomat's quick pace.
F&M's defensive pressure forced 19 turnovers resulting in 21
points for the Diplomats. The Bear's final turnover was committed
with five seconds to go as Holt grabbed the ball for her second
steal of the game.
Holt finished the night with 13 points and four assists, while
Barbush tallied 12 points and three assists. Megan Pauley led the
team with 14 points on the night.
The Bears were led by Teuber who finished with a double-double,
made up of a game-high 12 rebounds and 19 points, in addition to
her five steals. Alli Rosati notched 13 points, nine of which came
from behind the arc.
F&M returns home on Saturday, when they host a conference
double-header with Muhlenberg. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
