GETTYSBURG, Pa - Leading by as much as 19 points, and never
trailing, # 15 Franklin & Marshall survived a late Gettysburg
run to defeat the Bullets 76-58 Thursdays evening in Centennial
Conference (CC) men's basketball action.
The win is first time since 2004-05 that F&M (19-3, 13-2 CC)
has swept the regular season over the Bullets (11-10, 9-6 CC). With
losses by Muhlenberg and Ursinus this evening, the Diplomats hold a
three game lead in the CC with three games to play.
With F&M leading, 58-44, and 7:53 left to play, Gettysburg
went on a 12-4 run to come within six points. The Diplomats
countered with a Georgio Milligan-led 14-2 run to close out the
game. He converted three straight layups including a pair of
three-point plays. He scored eight, of his 16-points, in the last
eight minutes of the game.
The game started out slow as both teams struggled to find the
net. F&M finally pulled away and went up seven points halfway
through the first half. Gettysburg answered to come within two. The
Diplomats responded outscoring the Bullets 24-13 over the last ten
minutes to take a 34-21 edge into halftime. F&M held Gettysburg
25.9 percent shooting in the first stanza and the Bullets missed
their first 11 shots.
James McNally led all scorers with 24 points. McNally shot
10-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the stripe and picked up
his seventh double-double with 10 boards. Mike Baker turned in a
perfect shooting performance. Baker knocked in 12 points and shot
4-for-4 from the field and made all four of his foul shots.
Anthony Brooks added nine points for F&M and Steve Tolliver had
eight.
Andres Powers led the way for the Bullets. Powers scored 19
points and had seven rebounds. Alex Zurn added 18 points on
7-for-11 shooting.
F&M moved up two spots in the NCAA regional rankings. The
Diplomats sit in the second spot, behind Albright, in the
Mid-Atlantic Region.
Coach Robinson is now five wins from tying Lute Olson in the
14th spot on the all-time coaching wins list. Olson holds the
position with 780 victories.
F&M returns to the court on Saturday when the Diplomats
travel to Washington (Md.) for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
