LANCASTER, Pa. -- Down a point with six seconds left, #15
Franklin & Marshall set up to take the last shot. Georgio
Milligan inbounded the ball to Anthony Brooks who had a great look,
but the ball bounced off the rim as Franklin & Marshall lost
46-45 to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday evening in a Centennial
Conference (CC) men's basketball game.
Nine seconds before Brooks' shot, Mike Baker hit both of his
free throws to put F&M (20-4, 14-3 CC) up 45-44 and what many
thought would be the game winner. But nine seconds is lifetime in a
close basketball game and Hopkins (12-12, 8-9 CC) made the most of
it. Pat O'Connell was fouled on the ensuing possession, giving
Hopkins another chance. O'Connell drained both shots from the line
with the second one standing as the game-winner
F&M led by 13 points, 37-24, with 9:56 remaining in the
game. The Diplomats went cold and Hopkins got hot going on a 20-3
Andrew Farber-Miller-led run to go up four points, 44-40, with 1:45
showing on the clock. Miller scored 10, of his team-high 14
points in the run. James McNally hit one of his two foul shots on
the next possession to bring the Diplomats within three.
Brooks stole the ball from Sean O'Connor and went coast-to-coast
putting the Diplomats within a point with 50 seconds left.
O'Connell missed a jumper with 18 seconds remaining and fouled
Baker, setting up his shots from the stripe.
The game started out in a defensive battle as both teams
struggled to make any buckets. McNally's layup at 1:45 put F&M
up six points and Brooks hit a jumper with four seconds left to
give the Diplomats a 24-18 edge at halftime.
Three players scored in double-figures for F&M. McNally
finished with a game-high 15 points and Mike Baker scored 12 points
on 4-for-8 shooting. Brooks added 10 points for the Diplomats.
F&M returns to the court on Saturday when they Diplomats
host Dickinson for a CC double-header. The women tip-off at 2 p.m.
followed by the men at 4 p.m. for the last regular season game.
