LANCASTER, Pa. - With the Diplomat faithful packed into the
Mayser Center, #20 Franklin & Marshall took full advantage of
the home court, defeating Muhlenberg 97-72 in a Centennial
Conference (CC) semifinal game. The win sets up a rematch of
last year's championship game with Gettysburg. The Bullets defeated
Washington, 91-78, in the other semifinal game. F&M will square
off with Gettysburg tomorrow at 3 p.m.
F&M advances to its 10th CC Championship Game
since the conference began play in 1994. The game was the
50th conference postseason contest under coach Robinson
and 35th victory in those games. The 25-point
differential was the sixth largest scoring margin in F&M's
conference postseason history.
Four players scored in double-digits for the Diplomats. James
McNally and Anthony Brooks each scored 19 points. Brooks scored 15
in the first half and finished 6-for-7 from the floor, 3-for-3 from
behind the arc and 4-for-5 from the line.
Mike Baker turned in 14 points and Georgio Milligan added 10.
Milligan had six assists, four steals and two blocks. Hayk
Gyokchyan contributed nine points and pulled down eight boards from
the bench.
F&M came into the contest shooting 29.6% from the arc. On
Saturday the Diplomats shot 77.8% from three-point range, draining
three-in-a-row at 9:08 in the first half to go up nine points. The
Diplomats outscored the Mules 18-12 over the final six minutes to
take a 49-33 lead into halftime.
The Diplomats picked up where they left off in the first half
opening the second on 10-4 run to go up by 20 points five minutes
into the stanza. The Mules came within 16 points, 65-49, at 13:02,
but they could not keep pace with F&M as the Diplomats built
their lead to 30 with just over a minute to play.
F&M held a 32-26 advantage on the glass, collecting 13 on
the offensive side leading to 21 second chance points.
The winner of tomorrow's championship game will receive an
automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. The NCAA Division III Men's
Basketball Committee will make its selection of teams for the 2010
NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Sunday, February
28.
