COLLEGEVILLE, Pa - Anthony Brooks' dunk to open the game set a
tone that was tested, but never wavered, as #15 Franklin &
Marshall defeated Ursinus 70-62 in a Centennial Conference (CC)
showdown. The game featured the top-two teams in the CC with the
Diplomats taking a two-game advantage in the standings with the
win.
F&M (17-3, 11-2 CC) dominated majority of the game, leading
wire-to-wire, and held a 57-45 advantage with 6:38 left in the
game. Ursinus (13-7, 9-4 CC) answered, scoring nine unanswered to
bring to the game within three points. The Diplomats countered with
a 6-1 run to take a 63-55 edge with 3:06 showing on the clock.
After both teams traded buckets, Matt Hilton drilled a trey with
30 seconds left making the score 66-62. Brooks scored four of his
19 points from the line in the final 24 seconds to secure the win.
He finished the night shooting 60% from the floor and 7-for-8 from
the stripe.
The Diplomats came into the game with the second ranked defense
in the country and they lived up to that billing. F&M caused 21
turnovers, resulting in 21 points, and blocked six shots while
limiting the Bears to 42% shooting from the field. Brooks had five
steals with Georgio Milligan and James McNally collecting four
apiece.
McNally finished with a game-high 20 points and pulled down six
boards. Milligan added 15 points, shooting 3-for-4 from the line.
Mike Baker chipped in nine points, shooting 4-for-6 from the
field.
Remy Cousart led the way for Ursinus with 16 points. Hilton
added 13 and Jon Ward scored 12 points for the Bears.
The NCAA released its regional rankings before the game. F&M
was ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region behind Albright,
Lycoming and Cabrini.
Coach Robinson is now seven wins from tying Lute Olson in the
14th spot on the all-time coaching wins list. Olson holds the
position with 780 victories.
F&M returns to the court on Saturday when the Diplomats host
Muhlenberg for a CC double-header. The women tip-off at 2 p.m.
followed by the men a 4 p.m.
