LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 19 Muhlenberg
women's basketball team went on a 6-0 run with 49 seconds
remaining in regulation to seal a 55-61 victory over Franklin and
Marshall in Centennial Conference action on Monday evening. The
Mules improve to 17-3, 14-2 CC on the year, while the Diplomats
fall to 9-12, 5-11 CC.
Tied at 55 apiece with just over 1:30 to go in the second half,
Muhlenberg's Alexandra Chili was fouled on a made jumper, and
capitalized on the three-point play, sinking a free throw. Kelly
McKeon notched three more free throws to nab the win over the
Diplomats for the second time this season.
F&M opened up the game with a 9-2 advantage five minutes into
play, as Muhlenberg slowly got its momentum. The Mules took their
first lead of the game with nine minutes to play in the half off a
layup from Chili and never gave it up, going into the break with a
28-27 edge over the Diplomats.
The lead changed six times in the first three minutes of the
second period as the squads' defenses took charge. F&M
forced 10 turnovers in the half, totaling 11 points off of those
errors.
The Mules took a five-point lead, the highest of the half, five
minutes into play to go up 40-35. The Diplomats chipped away at the
deficit, taking its own five-point lead a mere five minutes later.
Down two with just over a minute and half to play, Beth Holt hit a
fast break layup to die the game. Holt would score F&M's
final points, however, as Muhlenberg took advantage of foul shot
opportunities for the win.
Megan Pauley recorded a double-double for the Diplomats, scoring a
team-high 15 points along with 10 rebounds. Alexa Barbush added 10
points and three assists, and Amy Chabitnoy grabbed 11 rebounds
along with her eight points.
McKeon tallied a game-high 20 points in addition to her 10
rebounds and three steals, while Chili scored 14 points and nabbed
three steals. The two combined for 56 percent of the Mules'
points.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to
Gettysburg for another conference double-header. Tip off is slated
for 6:00 p.m.
