SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Four different Diplomats found the net
in the first quarter, giving Franklin & Marshall the early jump
in a 9-6 win at Susquehanna on Wednesday. The win gives the
Diplomats (2-2) their first winning streak of the season, while
halting Susquehanna's (4-2) winning streak at four games.
Colin McKew factored in on three of F&M's first four
goals, including each of the first two in the opening three
minutes. McKew fed Justin Rayman at 13:11 to give F&M a 1-0
lead. 58 seconds later, McKew finished a pass from Kevin Kilpatrick
to beat Susquehanna's backstop, Will Torrence. After a Justin
Rayman fueled Sean Oliver goal, McKew set up Tristan Miller to give
the Diplomats a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Diplomats are 8-0 when leading after the first quarter under
third-year coach, Todd Cavallaro. The opening blitz saw F&M
fire 14 shots in Torrence's direction. He made a pair of his
11 saves in the first quarter. His attack mustered three shots in
the first quarter, but Chris Marcozzi stopped the only shot on
goal. Marcozzi stopped nine in the win.
Marcozzi's ran in to one spate of tough luck. After the
4-0 jump, Susquehanna scored four of the next five goals. Dustin
Breakey got the Crusaders on the board for the first time 2:49 into
the second quarter, but Sean Kenny answered for F&M just over
three minutes later.
Five minutes later, Sean Ledwick scored on the extra man. It was
the only one of five penalties the nation's 11th
best EMO unit could cash in on in the game. Breakey, who scored the
second quarter's first goal, struck again with two seconds
showing before the half. Marcus Cheatham got the Cru within one,
5-4, early in the third, but another F&M run put the game out
of reach.
Kilpatrick and Rayman, who assisted the second and third F&M
goals, scored the first and third of the Diplomats' second
run. Jeff Ritter punched in the game winner in between. All told,
eight different Diplomats scored, with Rayman being the only player
to do it twice. Five players recorded assists, with McKew getting
credit for two.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M opens
Centennial play at home against Ursinus.
