SALISBURY, Md. – An early barrage of Salisbury goals
proved insurmountable as the No. 2 Sea Gulls (9-0) knocked off No.
1 Franklin & Marshall (4-1), 16-11 on Saturday. It is the
second time in as many seasons that Salisbury has knocked F&M
from the ranks of the nation's unbeaten teams. The Diplomats
remain winless in four tries at Salisbury.
Jessica Chmielewski set the tone early, putting the Sea Gulls
out in front 1:23 in with the first of her four goals on the
afternoon. F&M's Blake Hargest set up Erin Dunne for the
first of two goals between the pair in the game's opening ten
minutes to tie it 1-1. The second time the pair of Diplomats
conspired was after back-to-back goals unassisted goals by Kim
Cudmore. The name Cudmore was thrown about often in the opening
run. After Dunne got F&M back within one, 3-2, Logan Bilderback
scored the first of her four to start a four goal run that included
four Cudmore points. Kim Cudmore fed Roxanne Raab at 17:54, and
then set up Ashley Cudmore 29 seconds later. 1:58 after that,
Ashley Cudmore punched in once again to make it 7-2.
Hargest stopped the bleeding with the first of her two goals on
the afternoon. Coming off of a 10-point performance against Babson,
Hargest piled up seven more on Saturday. She did the bulk of her
offensive work in the passing game, mounting her second consecutive
contest with five helpers. Both of Hargest's goals were set
up by Sarah Veneski, who finished the day with a goal and three
assists.
Hargest helped get the game within two late in the second half,
setting up Lauren Ehrhardt with 7:56 to make it 13-11 in favor of
the hosts. A pair of Chmielewski goals served as bookends around a
Bilderback tally to put the Diplomats on ice.
Salisbury is the first team to score in double digits on F&M
this season. The Gulls peppered the F&M net with 30 shots.
Lidia Sanza turned away eight, including six in a busy first half.
Julie Ann Caulfield made seven saves. She had four in the second
half.
The Diplomats return to action next Saturday when F&M opens
the Centennial slate at Bryn Mawr.
