LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 1 Franklin & Marshall used a
stifling defense and a balanced attack to hand Adrian College
(Mich.) a 15-5 defeat in women's lacrosse on Tuesday. Seven
different Diplomats (2-0) found the net, while F&M's
steady defense and goalkeeping left the Bulldogs (1-2) on the short
end of the chain.
The Diplomats' defense ended 13 Adrian possessions with
caused turnovers, including Maggie Shields game-high three. When
Arian managed to end its offensive forays with a shot, F&M
keeper Lidia Sanza was up to the challenge. The Diplomats'
senior turned away a dozen advances and was particularly stellar in
the first half allowing only a single goal. Amanda Lambert scored
that one goal on one of Adrian's five first-half
free-position-shots. She factored in Adrian's first three
tallies of the contest, but the third did not come until the
45th minute of the game.
Adrian's keeper, Laura Finfrock, made several outstanding
saves early to keep her team in the game at the outset. Five of her
seven stops came in the first half, with the bulk coming in the
opening five minutes. Finfrock, aided by a nearly five-minute stall
by her offense, kept the Diplomats off of the board for the first
10:17 of the contest. That was when Erin Dunne camped out on the
crease and collected a high feed from Meredith Lussier for the
first of five F&M goals by four different players in a three
minute stretch.
Dunne struck again 20 seconds later when a long feed intended
for Blake Hargest inadvertently glanced off of Hargest's
stick and beyond Finfrock. Hargest got on the board on the next
offensive possession when Lussier once again provided a clean feed
to the senior standing alone on the right post. 42 seconds
later it was Lussier's turn to change the scoreboard off of
an assist from Dunne to make it 4-0. 29 seconds later, Cat Serpe
weaved her way through 40 yards of occupied Bulldog real estate to
beat Finfrock for the 5-0 lead.
Adrian never threatened after the barrage.
Hargest and Lussier finished the game with four goals and a pair
of assists, while Dunne ended up with a hat trick and a pair of
helpers. Lussier scored the 25th free position goal of
her career just over ten minutes into the second half, and
Hargest's second helper moved her into a tie for
14th all-time in the assists department at F&M.
Laura Ruppersberger added one goal and an assist while Sarah
Veneski helped out twice. Lauren Erhardt, Serpe and Shields rounded
out the seven F&M scorers.
Lambert led the way for Adrian with their first two goals and an
assist. Stacey Birlson scored on Lambert's feed and handed
out a pair of assists.
The Diplomats move to 2-0 on the season, and return to action on
Thursday afternoon at Rowan.
