Diplomats Drop Devils

LANCASTER, Pa. – Three goals in a span of 1:27 broke an early 1-1 tie and put No. 2 Franklin & Marshall in front for good as the Diplomats handed Dickinson a 10-6 setback in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse on Saturday. The win was the 35th in as many varsity games against Dickinson.

The two teams traded early goals with the Red Devils (6-3, 3-2 CC) striking 22 seconds in. Alyssa Crellin completed a quick stick feed from Sara Braniecki parked back right to beat the Diplomats' (9-1, 4-0 CC) Lidia Sanza inside the low right post. The lead lasted 46 seconds until Meredith Lussier made a hard run from right to left across the top of the eight-meter fan and whipped a shot back against the grain past Jessie Clark.

After the early outburst, the game settled into the chippy, physical battle that has been the hallmark of the series of late. The two teams combined for 49 fouls, the most in any of F&M's games this season. The Diplomats were whistled a season-high 25 times.

After 14 scoreless minutes, Sarah Veneski fed a perfect pass from behind, setting up a low score for Maggie Mae Shields, camped on the top of the goal circle. Veneski finished the day with three assists. 47 seconds later, Erin Dunne ran left around a pair of Red Devils and buried her shot top left to make it 3-1. Lussier made it a 4-1 game 36 seconds later with a brilliant 180-degree tight-rope walk on the crease that finished with her second goal of the day.

The guns once again went silent.

Dickinson's Abby Larson broke the silence over 11 minutes later. She beat Sanza on a straight-away free position shot with 1:18 showing making it 4-2, but F&M answered before the half on another crisp Sarah Veneski feed, this one finished by Lauren Erhardt. The pair conspired again on the other side of the break to make it 7-2, but not before Lussier fed Hargest on the right post.

It appeared that the rout was on, but 22 seconds later, Crellin scored on a free position shot. Half of Dickinson's offense in the game came as a result of eight-meter opportunities, with a fourth coming on a scramble after a free position shot. Most of that occurred in a stretch of 1:29.

34 seconds after Crellin's FPS goal, Blake Hargest mimicked Lussier's crease run, but an F&M foul in the fan set up a Braniecki free position goal. 30 seconds later, Braniecki scooped up a rebound on a free position shot and pushed a pass through traffic for Kara Glazer's finish, making it a three–goal game at 8-5.

Dunne drove by Sunnie Ko and fired low for her second of the day with 21:50 left in the game. Crellin got the Devils back within three, 9-6, a little over three minutes later before the second half scoring spate stopped. Dunne completed her hat trick with 9:18 left in the game, putting a free position shot between the wickets of Clark. Clark made 13 saves in the game. Sanza stopped five at the other end.

The Red Devils dominated the draw circle with 12 possessions to F&M's six, but 23 turnovers proved costly. The Diplomats caused 11 of them, with four players causing a pair.

The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday against Muhlenberg. Opening draw is set for 4:30pm.
