LANCASTER, Pa. – Erin Dunne scored a career-high six goals
and assisted on two more as Franklin & Marshall dropped
Muhlenberg 17-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse on
Wednesday. The win was F&M's 26th in as many games against
Muhlenberg.
Dunne got the Diplomats (10-1, 6-0 CC) started in the game's
second minute, collecting a Cat Serpe feed and finishing it with a
quick stick at 28:11. The Mules' (7-5, 2-4 CC) Danielle Scarrone
answered on one of the first half's eight broken clears. Christine
Van Hise knocked down Lidia Sanza's outlet pass and forwarded it on
to Scarrone who ran to the goal without a defender in her path.
While Muhlenberg cashed in on a failed F&M clear, it was the
Diplomats' ride that snuffed out the Mules' early, stopping seven
of Muhlenberg's ten clear attempts in the first period. As a
result, Muhlenberg managed only six shots in the first half.
Maggie Mae Shields gave the Diplomats the lead for good a little
under two minutes after Scarrone scored. Shields collected a pass
from behind the net and ran off to the left of the cage. One
defender followed her and watched as Shields spun back to the top
of the crease and fired home to make it 2-1.
After Shield's tally, Dunne, Meredith Lussier and Laura
Ruppersberger took over the game. Seven of the game's next eight
goals featured at least one member of that trio. Lussier put up
three goals and an assist in that stretch and then added two more
helpers later in the second half for a six-point day.
Danielle Rosen scored the only non F&M goal in the trio's
run, making it 6-2 with 1:24 in the first, but Dunne set up
Ruppersberger's first with 15 ticks left in the first half.
Following a Lussier free position goal to open the second half,
Ruppersberger scored consecutive goals to complete her hat trick.
Cat Serpe then scored on the free position with 17:01 left in
the game to make it 10-2. The Diplolmats converted five-of-seven
free position shots on Wednesday. Serpe finished with two goals and
an assist.
After Serpe's first, Muhlenberg's offense finally began to find
open shots against a stingy Diplomats' defense. The Mules fired the
bulk of their 23 shots over the next ten minutes, but Lidia Sanza
was up to the challenge. Sanza turned away 15 shots in the game,
with 13 of the stops coming in the second half. Rosen netted her
second at 15:52 and Amanda McGovern scored the Mules' only free
position goal with 6:46 remaining.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday against Washington in
the final scheduled home game of the season.
