LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 4 Franklin & Marshall scored
twice in the first minute to set the tone and poured on the goals
throughout, walking to a 19-5 win over Washington (Md.). The
victory closed out the 2010 home slate, barring any postseason
play. The Diplomats got seven goals and an assist from Meredith
Lussier, while seniors Blake Hargest and Sarah Veneski combined for
five goals and four assists in the Centennial Conference (CC) win.
Veneski finished a Hargest feed to net the Diplomats' (11-1, 7-0
CC) first 27 seconds in, followed 25 seconds later by Lussier's
unassisted run through the Shorewomen (6-6, 2-5 CC) defense.
Hargest's first assist of the day tied the F&M career record
for career helpers at 150, and made her and Shannon Summers '09 the
only two players in CC history to roll up 150 goals and 150 assists
in a career. Hargest reset the mark with 6:48 remaining in the
first half, feeding the first of Cat Serpe's three on the day.
Hargest finished the game with three goals and three assists to
move past F&M Hall of Famer, Lauren Petrella '94, on the career
points list. Hargest, a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, now has 314
career points, and is within six of the College's mark of 320
points owned by Jen Pritchard '09. Hargest is also within ten
points of the CC career mark, currently owned by Bryn Mawr coach,
and 2002 Swarthmore graduate, Katie Tarr.
Lussier's seven goal effort was F&M's first since Kiki
Foster put seven in the net at Muhlenberg in March of 2004.
Lussier's day vaulted her up the F&M career goals chart, moving
her from 15th to 11th. The junior is up to 142 goals, 10 away from
breaking into the Diplomats' top ten.
Diplomats' keeper, Lidia Sanza also reached a milestone on
senior day. F&M's backstop recorded save number 500 of her
career, making her the fourth Diplomat to hit the mark. She turned
away seven in collecting the win, the Diplomat senior class' 41st
at home in their careers against only one Lancaster loss. F&M's
seniors are now 73-4 with three regular season games left to play.
The class of 2009 owns the F&M record for career victories at
76.
At the other end of the field, Amber Madore stopped 13 of
F&M's 44 shots on the afternoon. The Shorewomen managed only
14. The Diplomats dominated the draws, 18-8, and won the ground
ball battle, 15-11. Cat Serpe and Maggie Mae Shields each grabbed
four draws for F&M. The Diplomats killed six Washington clears
and forced 13 turnovers. Seniors Veneski and Paulette Cutruzulla
each caused a pair.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday at No. 6 Gettysburg.
The teams, both unbeaten in CC play will meet on the battlefield
with the winner likely earning the right to host the CC
Championship Tournament. Opening draw is slated for 7:00 pm.
