LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall
put on a hitting clinic earning 10 runs, including slamming three
homers, to earn a 10-8 win over Elizabethtown in game one of a
non-conference softball double header Tuesday. The Blue Jays
returned the favor in game two and handed the Diplomats an 8-1
defeat. F&M now sits at 9-15 on the year, while Elizabethtown
moved to 17-8.
The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 5-0 lead off of four hits
in the first inning of game one, but F&M came out swinging.
Megan Pauley stood on third off of a Caitlin Elfring double to left
field, and Alyssa Yackle walked to load the bases. Julianne
Whitleigh hit a grand slam homer to left field to put the Diplomats
on the board 5-4 through the first.
Elizabethtown followed with one run, and F&M countered with
two in the bottom of the second. Amanda Schellaci doubled and
Danielle Murphy smacked the Diplomats' second homerun to send the
two home and tie the score 6-6. F&M added another run in the
third off of a Schellaci sacrifice fly to center field that plated
Whitleigh.
The Blue Jays picked up their final runs in the fourth and fifth
frames to give Elizabethtown an 8-7 edge. With Murphy on second,
Elfring knocked out another double to send Murphy home in the
bottom of the sixth.
Elena Stein, pinch running for Elfring, advanced to third and
was sent home when Yackle slammed a homerun to left field. It
marked the first career homer for the senior and put the Diplomats
on top 10-8 for good.
Whitleigh went 2-for-3 at the plate, picking up two runs and a
game-high four RBIs, and Murphy went 2-for-3 and collected in two
RBIS.
Liz Chudzik picked up the win, fanning five batters.
Julie Sebastian took the loss, allowing 11 hits and walking
four.
It was the Blue Jays' turn in game two to rack up the homeruns.
Courtney Comstock stood on third and Paige Tanner homered to center
field to put Elizabethtown up 2-0 in the first. As the Diplomats
stepped up, Murphy doubled to left center and advanced to third on
a Pauley bunt. Elfring singled to left field and Murphy touched
home, nabbing F&M's lone run of the contest.
Elizabethtown tacked on one run in each of the second and third
frames, before tallying three in the fourth. Elly McCarthy homered
to left center to run in Comstock and put the Blue Jays up 7-1. In
the top of the seventh Heather Peluso hit a homerun to left field
to pick up Elizabethtown's final run of the game.
Sara Damato was saddled with the loss, allowing 10 hits and
walking four.
Emily Vogel picked up the win, allowing five hits and striking
out one.
Franklin & Marshall hosts McDaniel for its final home game
of the regular season. The Centennial Conference match-up is slated
for 3:30 p.m.
