LANCASTER, Pa. – McDaniel notched a run
in the top of the ninth inning and Franklin & Marshall could
not recover as the Green Terror snatched a 7-6 win from the
Diplomats in a Centennial Conference (CC) softball double header
Thursday afternoon. Game two was halted due to darkness and will be
continued during the week of April 26.
McDaniel (14-21, 4-9) picked up a run in the top of the first
and two more in the third to take an immediate 3-0 lead. F&M
(9-16, 2-11) went on to tally three runs in the third to knot the
game.
Amanda Schellaci and Danielle Murphy stood on third and second,
respectively, as Caitlin Elfring singled to left field to send
Schellaci home. Alyssa Yackle then slammed a triple to left field
to plate both Murphy and Elfring and tie the score.
The Green Terror put themselves on top again with one run in the
fourth, but the Diplomats countered with two runs of their own.
Schellaci doubled to left field to advance Kelly Marchisio to
third, followed by a Murphy ground out to second base to send
Marchisio home. Megan Pauley singled and picked up an RBI as
Schellaci touched home to give F&M the lead through the
fourth.
The fifth frame remained scoreless followed by a one-run sixth
for both squads. With Marchisio on third, Murphy singled to send
Marchisio home and keep the Diplomat lead. McDaniel tied things up
in the seventh and F&M could not muster another run, sending
the contest into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, the Green Terror nabbed their final
run in the top of the ninth and the Diplomats could not counter,
falling by a score of 7-6.
McDaniel's Erinne Warrenfeltz picked up the win, allowing 11
hits on the day.
Sara Damato took the loss, allowing two hits and striking out
two.
Game two was a hit-for-hit contest between the two clubs. The
Green Terror got on the board first with one run, but F&M came
out swinging, taking on three runs in the first. Liz Chudzik's
double to center field plated Elfring and Pauley. After advancing
two bases Chudzik was sent home by a single from Marchisio.
McDaniel racked up six runs in the second, including a homerun
from Warrenfeltz, to take a 7-3 lead. F&M stood scoreless and
the Green Terror went on to tack on four more runs in the third and
one in the fourth for an 11-3 lead.
The Diplomats did not let down, however, tallying five runs in
the bottom of the fourth to bring the score within four. With the
bases loaded for the majority of the frame, Pauley, Elfring,
Chudzik, Julianne Whitleigh, and Elana Jaret took turns hitting
singles and sending players home.
After McDaniel posted two more runs in the top of the fifth, the
game was halted due to darkness with the score 14-8 in the Green
Terror's favor. Action will continue on a date to be
determined.
Elfring collected three runs and two RBIs on the day, while
Chudzik picked up two runs and three RBIs. Schellaci added two
runs.
