CARLISLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall softball team
closed out the 2010 season splitting a Centennial Conference (CC)
double header with Dickinson Saturday. The Diplomats won the first
game 4-3 but the Red Devils retaliated for a 9-1 win in game two.
F&M finished the season with a record of 10-18, 8-10 CC, and
the Red Devils improved to 15-16, 8-6 CC.
In game one, Amanda Schellaci's triple to right center followed
by a home plate touch on a catcher's error gave the Diplomats the
one-run advantage F&M needed for the win.
Neither squad could get on the board in the first two frames,
but Dickinson tallied three runs in the top of the third to take a
3-0 lead. The Diplomats were held scoreless in the third, but
knotted the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Caitlin Elfring hit a ground out RBI with the bases loaded to
send Schellaci home. With Danielle Murphy on third and Megan Pauley
on second, Alyssa Yackle slammed a two RBI double to center field
to tie the score 3-3.
After quiet fifth and sixth innings, Schellaci's run in the top
of the seventh gave the Diplomats a one-run edge for the eventual
4-3 win.
Liz Chudzik earned the win, limiting the Red Devils to just four
hits.
Liz Barry took the loss, allowing eight hits and fanning three
batters.
Game two was scoreless for both teams through the second inning
until F&M notched a run in the top of the third. Murphy smacked
a homer to left field, marking her third homerun of the year.
The Red Devils responded with six runs in the bottom of the
third, to put Dickinson on top 6-1. Keeping the Diplomats scoreless
and limiting them to three hits, the Red Devils added another run
in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn a 9-1 victory.
Chudzik was saddled with the loss, allowing three hits and six
runs.
Allison Jordan earned the win, allowing three hits and retiring
nine batters.
Franklin & Marshall closed out the 2010 regular season at
Dickinson, and it was the final game for seniors Caitlin Elfring,
Kristina Fietkiewicz, and Alyssa Yackle.
