LANCASTER, Pa. -- Blake Hargest scored six goals and assisted on
another to lead No. 2 Franklin & Marshall to a 17-6 win over
Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) play on Saturday. Hargest
tallied her 150th career goal in the win, and moved to 298 points
in her career.
Hargest started the scoring in the opening minute, finishing a
quick stick feed by Sarah Veneski. The same combination struck on
the same play 6:06 later giving the Diplomats a 2-0 lead. Five
minutes later, F&M struck with back-to-back goals in a stretch
of 37 seconds. Laura Ruppersberger then cashed in on a free
position attempt, before Blake Hargest completed her hat trick by
rolling out from behind and sticking a shot up on the top shelf.
Seven minutes later, Ruppersberger stuffed home her second
scooping her own rebound on a free position shot and dumping it
home. Erin Dunne made it 6-0 before Ursinus got on the board on an
F&M miscue. Lidia Sanza had her clearing pass swiped by Emily
Diehl, who fired a shot into the Diplomats' cage before Sanza could
get settled. Lindsay Urban then scored a free position goal to get
the Bears back within four, but a late Diplomat surge snuffed out
any comeback hopes.
Meredith Lussier drove in from eight yards out and beat the
Bears' keeper with 23 seconds showing. The Diplomats won the
ensuing draw and made bang-bang passes up the field that ended with
Maggie Mae Shields setting up Ruppersberg's third and an 8-2
F&M lead at the half. The Diplomats continued to pour it on in
the second half.
Lussier finished the game with two goals and three assists.
Lauren Ehrhardt scored twice, while Veneksi and Shields each
recorded a pair of assists. Erin Dunne scored once and assisted on
another.
Ursinus' starting keeper, Alex McBride, made 14 saves, including
several brilliant stops in 47:56 of work, but absorbed the loss.
Her team was outshot 35-11. Diehl, who netted the first Bears'
goal, finished the day with a pair, as did Alison Furman. Furman
also recorded an assist.
The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday evening at Swarthmore.
