HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall
and Haverford each took turns using late-inning runs to earn
victories, as the squads split 1-1 in a Centennial Conference (CC)
softball double header on Tuesday. The Fords won the first game
10-9, and the Diplomats took the second game 6-3.
Danielle Murphy and Megan Pauley hit back-to-back doubles to
send the Diplomats (6-8, 2-6 CC) up 4-0 after the second frame of
game number one. Murphy's hit to left center sent Amanda
Schellaci to third while Gina Camuso and Alyssa Yackle each touched
home. Pauley's hit plated Murphy and Schellaci.
F&M extended its lead 6-1 after the third. Schellaci was
walked with the bases loaded to send home Yackle. Pauley was also
walked as Elana Jaret went home. In the bottom of the fifth frame
the Fords (11-9, 5-3 CC) added two runs to shorten the deficit to
three.
The Diplomats tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth
in hopes of securing the win, but Haverford stepped up and went on
a seven-run rally to steal the victory. The Fords scored one of
their seven runs off of a hit, while the rest were unearned and
came off of walks and infield errors.
Maggie Cronin was credited with the save for Haverford. She
allowed seven hits and walked three, while striking out four.
Liz Chudzik suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and walking
six.
In game two it was the Fords' turn to get on the board
first. The squad went up 2-0 after the third frame. The Diplomats
collected a one run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the
game. Camuso was walked with the bases loaded and Chudzik was sent
home for F&M's first run in the fourth. Chudzik then
picked up an RBI when she singled to center field and plated
Murphy.
Haverford added another run in the bottom of the sixth to take a
3-2 edge into the final frame. The Diplomats' used their
final chance to pay back the Fords and claim the victory. Pauley
and Elfring sat on second and first, respectively, when Chudzik
slammed a double down the right line. Pauley scored and Brittany
Kurtz came in to pinch run for Elfring at second.
Julianne Whitleigh bunted to earn a single and send home Kurtz.
Jaret stepped up and doubled to left field while Whitleigh and
Chudzik both scored. The Diplomats held the Fords to a scoreless
seventh and secured the win.
Lisa Karmel was saddled with the loss, allowing nine hits and
walking four. She also fanned eight batters.
Karalynne Clark picked up her first victory of the season for
F&M. She allowed eight hits and struck out two.
Yackle tallied a team-high three runs, and Murphy and Pauley
collected three RBIs apiece on the day.
F&M hosts Albright for a double header on Thursday. The
first game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
