LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin &
Marshall softball team rolled past Albright 13-5 in the first game
of a non-conference double header and was well on it's way to a
two-game sweep, when the second contest was halted after four and
half innings due to darkness. Decisions regarding whether or not
the game will be rescheduled will be determined later this week. As
of now, the Diplomats sit with a record of 7-8, while the Lions
fell to 6-15.
Albright got on board first with two runs in the first frame,
but the Lions remained tamed as Liz Chudzik settled in on the
mound. F&M immediately countered Albright's two runs with three
of its own in the first.
Danielle Murphy stood on second when Caitlin Elfring slammed a
double to left field to send Murphy home. Julianne Whitleigh
hammered her first homerun of her career to left field, sending
home Elfring and putting the Diplomats on top by one.
The Diplomats doubled their score to take a 6-2 lead in the
bottom of the second. Elana Jaret and Gina Camuso stood on second
and third, respectively, as Murphy stepped up and knocked out her
first career homer to left center field.
After a quiet third, the Diplomats added three more tallies to
the scoreboard. Megan Pauley singled and stole second, and Liz
Chudzik hit a double up the middle as Pauley ran home. Karalynne
Clark, pinching running for Chudzik, was plated when Whitleigh
singled. Alyssa Yackle finished out the frame with a double to left
center field to send home Whitleigh for the second time on the
day.
The Lions collected three runs in the top of the fifth to
shorten the gap, but the Diplomats quickly answered with four runs
to earn an eight-run lead, activating the eight-run rule.
Murphy hit 3-for-4 at the plate, with a game-high three runs and
four RBIs.
Chudzik earned the victory, allowing seven hits and fanning two
batters.
Allie Frank took the loss, allowing five hits and striking out
one.
The start of game two mimicked the first, with Albright notching
two runs in the first inning and the Diplomats countering with
three. Murphy nabbed her fourth run of the day when Elfring singled
and sent her home. Chudzik followed suit, hitting a double to left
field to plate Elfring, and Yackle smashed a double to send home
Chudzik.
The clubs then exchanged two runs apiece in the second frame.
Elfring doubled with the bases loaded, and Amanda Schellaci and
Kelly Marchisio both scored to keep F&M on top.
Amidst a quiet Lions squad, the Diplomats added another run in
the third and tacked on three more in the fourth. Pauley ran home
as Elfring singled, followed by a Gina Camuso double to right field
that plated Yackle and Whitleigh.
Albright nabbed two runs in the top of the fifth, when the game
was halted due to darkness, with the score at 9-6 in the Diplomats
favor.
The Diplomats host Stevenson for a Senior Day double header on
Saturday, April 10. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
