GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall will face
Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse
championship game for the eighth consecutive year thanks to a 15-0
win over Ursinus in Saturday's semifinal. The shutout was the first
in the history of the Centennial postseason.
The Diplomats (13-3) bested their own record for least goals
allowed in Centennial postseason play. F&M had set the previous
record with a 16-3 win over McDaniel in the 2007 CC semis. Lidia Sanza
needed only four saves to secure the Diplomats' second shutout of
the season, marking the first year in which F&M pitched a pair
of shutouts. The Diplomats defense limited the Bears (11-6) to
eight shots in the game.
Blake
Hargest and Meredith
Lussier reached career milestones in a 9-0 first half rout.
Lussier twice drove through multiple Ursinus defenders to give
F&M an early 2-0 lead and get herself to the 150-goal plateau.
She finished the first half with a hat trick. Hargest scored the
third and ninth goal of the first half, tying then breaking Katie
Tarr's Centennial Conference record for career points. Hargest's
second goal was the 325th point of her career.
The Diplomats scored on six of their first nine shots in the
game punching in three in a stretch of 2:37. Hargest's first
started the spurt that ended with a Maggie Mae
Shields pair.
Lussier finished the game with 4 goals and 2 assists. One of her
feeds allowed Megan Cohen to
find her first goal of the season. Sarah Veneski
scored a goal and assisted three more.
The Diplomats and Bullets will face one another for the eighth
consecutive championship final tomorrow on Clark Field at 2:00pm.
The home team has won each of the first seven title meetings
between the schools.
