Diplomats Complete Perfect CC Regular Season

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. - Chelsey Talhelm recorded a goal in each half to lift the seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Dickinson in the final regular season contest for both squads on Monday night at Tylus Field. With the win, the Diplomats improve to 14-2 overall and complete the Centennial Conference (CC) season unscathed at 10-0 for the first time in school history. The Red Devils see their year come to a close with a record of 5-12 (1-9 CC).

Talhelm put the Diplomats on top 1-0 in the ninth minute off a setup from Allison McLaren. McLaren dribbled towards the goal on the right side and sent a back-pass just out of reach of Dickinson goalkeeper Katy Schlechtweg, where Talhelm was waiting and touched it into the back of the cage for an early F&M advantage.

F&M continued to bombard the Red Devil defense with shots on cage and penalty corners, but Schlechtweg kept Dickinson within striking distance with several superb saves throughout the night. The Red Devils put together a strong defensive effort all night long as they routinely had multiple defenders behind the ball, but were unable to manufacture any dangerous scoring opportunities of their own.

Talhelm was able to break through the Dickinson defense once again in the 50th minute. Steph McDonald ripped a shot from the left side that was blocked by Schlechtweg, but Talhelm was in the right spot to clean up the rebound and slid it home to make it 2-0.

The Diplomats dominated the stat sheet as they outshot the Red Devils, 19-2, and held a 21-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Goalkeeper Avery Koep (14-2) tallied one save in the victory for F&M, while Schlechtweg (5-12) stopped eight shots in a losing effort.

F&M will host the CC tournament for the first time ever this weekend. The top-seeded Diplomats will face off against the winner of Wednesday's first round matchup between fourth-seeded Haverford and fifth-seeded Washington College on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 12:00 pm. The other CC semifinal, featuring second-seeded Ursinus and third-seeded Johns Hopkins, will follow the Diplomats' contest on Saturday at approximately 2:30 pm.
