Diplomats Tame Mustangs

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 3 Franklin & Marshall used a ball-hawking ride defense, with Erin Dunne's four goals and two assists, to knock off No. 20 Stevenson 14-4 Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field. The Diplomats remained perfect on the season at 3-0 while the Mustangs fell to 4-2.

F&M's offense had its highest output of the season but it was the Diplomats' defense that frustrated Stevenson all day. F&M stopped nine Mustang clear attempts, scooped 26 ground balls, forced 25 turnovers and goalie Rebecca Rosen turned away seven of 11 shots.

Dunne got the offense rolling for the Diplomats with a feed to Mary McNutt, who one-timed the feed, to put F&M ahead 1-0. Cat Serpe's clear and dish to Lauren Selawski two minutes later put F&M ahead by two before Dunne's crease roll at the 11:08 mark made it 3-0. Leah Warner scored the Mustangs' first goal with 6:54 left in the first before Katie Delaney and Serpe netted consecutive shots to end the half to put F&M ahead 5-1. Serpe assisted on Delaney's score and Dunne dished to Serpe for the final score of the half.

Stevenson made it a 5-2 game early in the second half when Megan Weiss buried a free position attempt. Dunne and Selawski answered with free position goals of their own to give F&M a 7-2 lead with 22:00 left in the game. Maggie Mae Shields and Mary McNutt found the back of the net in a two-minute span to give the Diplomats a 9-2 advantage before the Mustangs stopped the bleeding on a score from Warner at 16:10.

The Diplomats finished the game with a 5-1 scoring run which featured two scores from Dunne and one each by Selawski, Ali Kelly and Mary Mitchell. It was the first collegiate goals for both Kelly and Mitchell.

F&M converted on 4-of-5 free position attempts and successfully cleared the ball 15-of-18 times.

Selawski finished with three goals and one assist while Serpe (1 goal, 2 assists) and McNutt (2 goals) finished with multiple points for the Diplomats. Rosen earned her first collegiate win between the pipes for F&M and coach Lauren Paul won her 40th game in the just three seasons as the Diplomats boss.

The Diplomats will hit the road for two games in West Palm Beach, Fla. before returning to Lancaster in their Centennial Conference opener at Muhlenberg on March 19.
