Diplomats Spread the Wealth in First Round Win

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall had seven players tally multiple points in an 18-7 win over Montclair State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships. The No. 6 Diplomats (18-2) got season and career highs of five points from Caroline Krohn and Cat Serpe.

Krohn, a first-year attack, netted her first career hat trick. She got two thirds of the way there in the opening four minutes, putting F&M on the board 33 seconds in. Her second, assisted by Serpe, came less than three minutes later. Serpe set up the first of Lauren Ehrhardt's four goals 32 seconds later to make it 3-0 game in favor of the hosts. Serpe added another assist and two goals before the day was out. She matched her season and career high of five points for the fourth time this year.

The Red Hawks (13-6) stormed back with three-straight in a four-minute span. Maggie Fallon got Montclair on the board first with a free position goal. That was followed 25 seconds later by the first of Cora Delfini's pair on the afternoon. Three minutes later, Kailee Beal tied it at 3-3. Fallon and Beal each registered an assist to finish with a pair of points. Kayla Henderson kept pace with her teammates adding two goals.

F&M responded to the challenge with a nine-goal run, sparked by Serpe. The fifth goal in the decisive run came out of the stick of Krohn with 11:31 left in the first half. It held up as the game winner.

Lauren Selawski chipped in two assists during the stretch. She finished the game with four points, getting an additional helper and a goal. Maggie Mae Shields and Erin Dunne each added a pair of goals and an assist to the Diplomats' cause, while Mary Mitchell scored twice.

Montclair's Tiffani Henderson was under duress throughout the contest. She came up with 13 saves on F&M's 40 shots. The Diplomats dominated possession partially as a result of MSU's unforced errors. The Red Hawks turned the ball over 18 times, including eight on failed clears. The Diplomats only caused five turnovers with Serpe accounting for a pair of them.

The win earned F&M the right to face Messiah, who beat F&M 10-9 in overtime in a game played in Florida back in March. The No. 12 Falcons were unranked at the time of their win. They were the only unranked team to beat the Diplomats since the start of the 2005 season. The College of New Jersey, 17-0 winners over Gwynedd Mercy, will face Catholic University in the other Regional Semifinal at F&M. Catholic topped Mary Washington 18-10 on Wednesday to advance.

F&M will face Messiah at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Tylus Field. That will be followed by The College of New Jersey taking on Catholic at 2:00 p.m. The winners of Saturday's Regional semis will draw it up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
