Salandra Leads F&M Over Hopkins

LANCASTER, Pa. – Jon Salandra had a career-night with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 9 Franklin & Marshall to a 65-40 victory over Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action.  F&M improved to 17-1, 10-1 CC while the Blue Jays fell to 10-8, 6-5 CC. 

Salandra shot a near-perfect 12-for-13 from the floor to go over the 20-point plateau for the first time in his career.  His double-double was also the first for Salandra as a Diplomat. The sophomore tied a career-high with three blocks and improved his conference-leading shooting percentage to 69% from the floor. 

F&M led wire-to-wire and jumped out to an early 9-0 lead four minutes into the game. The Diplomats went up 20 points, 24-4, at 6:17 before going into the break with a 33-16 edge. Salandra tallied 12 points in the opening half and Hayk Gyokchyan netted eight. 

The Diplomats continued their dominance in the final half, leading by as many as 27 and never trailing by more than 14 points.  F&M went up 20 points, 49-29, at 10:01 and maintained a 20-point advantage the remainder of the game. 

Georgio Milligan finished with 13 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the stripe. Milligan has 1,664 career points and is five points shy from passing Terry Scott '88 for the third spot on the all-time F&M scoring list. Don Marsh '79 sits in the second position with 1,695 points and James McNally '11 is on top with 1,796. 

Gyokchyan netted 12 points and nine boards on 4-for-7 shooting. Ed Early and Morgan Lee both tallied six points. 

F&M came into the game leading the nation in defense with 54.9 points allowed per game and lowered that average to 54.1 by the end of the contest. The Diplomats held a commanding 42-20 advantage on the glass, including a 27-6 edge on the defensive side. 

F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats host Haverford at 4:00 p.m.
