SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Matt Porter scored a career-high 18 points to lead No. 8 Franklin & Marshall to a 74-50 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats have won seven consecutive games over the Garnet and improved to 13-0 (6-0 CC) while Swarthmore fell to 1-11 (1-4 CC) on the season.
F&M opened up the contest with an 8-2 run just over three minutes into the game to jump out to an early lead. Swarthmore came within four points, 10-6, at 14:00, before the Diplomats went on a 16-6 run over the next eight minutes to blow the game wide open. F&M took its largest lead of half, 29-14, with 3:56 remaining in the opening stanza and cruised into the break with a 35-22-halftime edge.
The Diplomats maintained at least a double-digit lead the remainder of the game and led by as many as 29 points with 2:09 left to play. Swarthmore came within 10 points, 37-27, four minutes into the second half, but could not keep pace with F&M's offense.
Hayk Gyokchyan finished with a game-high 21 points and pulled down 11 boards for his sixth double-double of the year. Georgio Milligan netted nine points with six rebounds and Jon Salandra finished with eight points. Brandon Beckford added six points for F&M.
Jay Kober led the way for the Garnet with 19 points while Michael Giannangeli added 14 points.
F&M held a commanding 42-21 advantage on the glass and outshot Swarthmore 51% to 32% from the floor.
The Diplomats return to action on Thursday when F&M hosts Muhlenberg at 8:00 p.m.
