Diplomats Roll Past Generals

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. - Five players recorded multiple goals to lead the Franklin & Marshall women's lacrosse team past visiting Washington & Lee, 14-6, in its season opener on Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field. The No. 6 Diplomats move to 1-0 with the victory, while the No. 13 Generals fall to 2-1.

The Diplomats led from start to finish and used a balanced scoring attack to down the Generals. Six different players netted goals for F&M, with five delivering at least two scores. Lauren Selawski (4) and Erin Dunne (3) combined for seven goals, while Cat Serpe, Caroline Krohn and Lauren Ehrhardt each registered two. Serpe also added a game-high two assists on the day.

Dunne gave F&M the early advantage with an unassisted score just 3:31 into the contest, while Serpe tallied an unassisted goal of her own two minutes later. Maggie Mae Shields netted a free position score just a minute later to push the Diplomat lead to 3-0.

Katie Hagan put Washington & Lee on the board at the 18:52 mark of the first half, but the Diplomats responded with three tallies over the next five minutes to take a 6-1 edge. Krohn and Dunne each notched free position goals, before Dunne completed her hat trick off a feed from Serpe to stretch the F&M lead to five.

Julia Van Sant registered a free position score for the Generals with 7:21 remaining in the first stanza to bring the count to 6-2, but F&M once again had an answer as it found the back of the net twice more prior to halftime. Serpe notched her second goal of the game at the 3:07 mark, while Selawski scored just 12 seconds later on a man-up situation to give the Diplomats a commanding 8-2 lead at the half.

The second half was much of the same as the Diplomats outscored the Washington & Lee 6-4 after the break en route to the victory. Selawski registered three of those scores, while Ehrhardt netted two and Krohn added one. The Generals added two free position scores in the closing minutes to bring the final count to 14-6.

F&M held the edge over the Generals in both shots (26-13) and ground balls (23-16) in the victory.

Kelsey Hoffman (1-0) earned the win in net for the Diplomats, totaling six saves on the afternoon. Jennifer Linder (1-1) took the loss for the Generals, allowing 12 goals and notching five saves in 42:35 minutes of action before being relieved by Cara Mulligan in the game's latter stages.

Ali Shearin led the way for Washington & Lee with two goals in a losing effort.

F&M returns to action on Tuesday at York (Pa.). Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
