Box Score 2 HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall split a pair of Centennial Conference (CC) games to Haverford on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats (12-16-1, 4-6 CC) dropped the first game in extra innings 2-1, and shut-out the Fords (15-12-1, 2-8 CC) in the second 5-0.
In the first game, neither team scored a run until the bottom of fourth inning when Haverford got on the scoreboard off of a Dayle Comerford solo homerun to centerfield. The scored remained 1-0 in favor of the Fords until F&M got a run of its own in the top of the seventh. Malorie Sassaman drilled a double to left field that plated Megan Pauley from second and tied the contest 1-1 to force extra innings.
After a quiet eighth inning from both teams, Haverford broke the tie in the bottom of the ninth and claimed the victory off of a double up the middle from Laura Iwanyk, which allowed Lauren Touey to touch home for the winning run for the Fords.
Justine Lohrey (3-5) took the loss for the Diplomats, pitching 8.1 innings. Lohrey allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out four.
Claire Fitzgerald (8-4) earned the complete-game win for Haverford, giving up five hits, one run and striking out five batters.
In the second game, F&M scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a quick 3-0 lead. Sassaman hit her second double of the day to plate the first run, while Kaitlin Zampino registered a double of her own in the second frame to bring home Ashley Hartshorn and make it 2-0. In the top of the third inning, Julianne Whitleigh hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Sassaman.
The Diplomats completed their scoring in the sixth frame, plating two more runs to take a 5-0 advantage. Liz Middleton drove in the first run with a single to left field that scored Rachel Laufer, and the final run of the game came off a single from Sarah Kirk, which brought Hartsboro home for the score.
Zampino (1-3) picked up her first win and shut-out of the season, pitching a complete game. Zampino allowed just five hits, while striking out 12 batters.
Brittany Stevenson (5-8) recorded the loss for the Fords, pitching all seven innings. Stevenson allowed 10 hits, five runs, and struck out five.
The Diplomats return to the diamond on Tuesday at CC foe Gettysburg. Game one is set for 3:00 pm.
